It’s that time of year...
...when the holiday season is fast approaching bringing lots of opportunities to entertain and celebrate. The atmosphere in the market is reflecting the festive season.
Diana will be making her mouth watering Pork Tourtiere this week and we will have them available until the end of January. The tourtieres are available with or without apples and are delicious when accompanied with our homemade chilli sauce. These pies are great to have on hand for easy entertaining. Keep them in the freezer until you are ready to cook. Transfer into your own pie dish before baking and enjoy the compliments!
Anne’s homemade Christmas cakes are soaking in rum and will be ready for purchase December 1st. The Livingston family tradition begins in early September when the recipe passed down for generations is brought out and all the finest ingredients are mixed in large bowls, filling the farm kitchen with the first smells of the holiday season. This cake receives rave reviews every year and always sells out quickly. We recommend reserving as we only make a limited amount.
Another holiday favourite is mincemeat. Mincemeat initially began as a way to preserve food. Just as our ancestors would have done we make our mincemeat in large batches using freshly ground beef, suet, pears from our garden, currants and spices. The batches are steeped in rum and brandy for minimum one month before using in tarts and pies. Mincemeat pies and tarts are offered as a traditional holiday treat and may be served with ice cream or hard sauce. The mincemeat will be available December 1st in pies and tarts baked at the market. We also sell the mincemeat by weight for your own home baking.
Don’t forget to order your Christmas Turkeys. We now have a farmer growing 14lbs and under, allowing us to offer fresh smaller turkeys. As always we have fresh turkeys in the 15 lb to 30 lb range as well. If you are entertaining and need a fresh turkey prior to Christmas please do not hesitate to order as we do have a Mennonite farmer who supplies us with fresh turkeys throughout the year.
Fresh Goose, Duck, and Pheasant are other Holiday fares which we will be taking orders for.
Larry our butcher makes a great Turducken, a de-boned chicken stuffed into a de-boned duck, which itself is stuffed into a de-boned turkey. All of the poultry comes fresh from local growers. If you have any special meat request don’t forget to speak to Larry. He loves a challenge!
Rick’s Duck Liver and Chicken Liver pate with red onion marmalade will be available for the holidays. These are always a favourite as well. For a full catering menu you can visit our website or give us a call and we will design a menu to accommodate your event.
I have brought in some great gift and decor items for the holidays. We will be setting up the store this week and I welcome you to come in and explore. If you have a certain gift in mind and are unable to find it let me know and I will be happy to find it for you. I work with a number of great suppliers and am able to source out most requests!
Larkin’s talent for creating great gift baskets always receives a “WOW”! Bring us a list of your needs along with a budget and she will be happy to design the perfect basket.
Please allow us to assist you with menu planning, catering, dishes rented, or just a little friendly advice.
Remember the holiday season is a time to enjoy friends and family.
Cheers
Janine
